BORIS BEREZOVSKY OBJECTS TO A SYMBIOSIS OF LIBERALS AND MOTORISTS
Nezavisimaya Gazeta, April 29, 2003, EV
Liberal Russia chairman Boris Berezovsky suggests an emergency congress. “Sergei Yushenkov was murdered the other day, I would not like to discuss our party affairs at this point,” Berezovsky said. “But we cannot afford to waste any time.”
The decision was prompted by the recent initiative of Viktor Pokhmelkin who declared formation of a liberal-democratic electoral bloc. The decision is rumored to have been made by the inner circle of Pokhmelkin’s associates. “I do not want to analyze the resolutions adopted by this rally,” Berezovsky said. “What counts is that they did not make the decision that would have mattered – that of the emergency congress. Emergency congress because of Yushenkov’s assassination.”
“Mr. Pokhmelkin stalls for time so as to use the Kremlin’s support and do away with regional organizations so as to replace them with loyal ones,” Berezovsky said.
TERRORIST ACTS PREVENTED
Izvestia, April 29, 2003, p. 8
According to INTERFAX news agency, the Federal Security Service arrested a dangerous gang in Chechnya that was preparing some terrorist acts in Dagestan.
According to Ilya Shabalkin of the regional operational headquarters for the counter-terrorism operation in the Caucasus, secret services of the Nozhai-Yurt district of Chechnya bordering on Dagestan were tipped that local terrorist Rappani Khalilov was preparing a serious terrorist act in Dagestan. The act was to be organized in a public place during the May holidays, Shabalkin said. Detectives found the household where eleven sacks filled with more than 500 kg of explosives were hidden (said explosives are analogous to what was used in the explosions in Moscow and Volgodonsk).
