STEPASHIN DISAPPROVES OF THE CONFLICTS BETWEEN TV CHANNELS

Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin has expressed his dissatisfaction with the conflict between the Media-Most company and ORT and the Presidential Administration. He announced that he has met with the heads of the companies. Stepashin said, “I did not try to reconcile them. I only wanted to understand the situation. This situation worries me as a person and as the prime minister. And the government’s position is unambiguous: these matters should be settled by the new ministry headed by Lesin. The government does not have minions. The priority task for the ministry is to create equal conditions for all TV and radio companies.

“As for concrete economic aspects, I have told the finance minister to clarify the situation regarding the debts of the companies.”

YELTSIN MEETS WITH THE ACTING GENERAL PROSECUTOR

President Boris Yeltsin has met in the Kremlin with acting General Prosecutor Yury Chaika. According to information agencies, Yury Chaika consented to Yeltsin’s proposal to take the position of deputy secretary of the Security Council. Chaika has already sent a letter to the Federation Council with a request to relieve him of the post of senior deputy general prosecutor as of August 7.

INGUSHETIAN PRESIDENT RUSLAN AUSHEV IS WORRIED ABOUT THE SITUATION IN THE NORTH CAUCASUS

Ingushetian President Ruslan Aushev has announced that the situation is the North Caucasus is being exacerbated. In his opinion, the tension in the region is caused by the fact that a new ideology has been brought thither. According to him, there are many forces in the Caucasus that are waiting for the further development of the situation in Karachaevo-Cherkessia. He fears that the situation may develop according to the Dagestani model. He said, “In fact, a preventive war is going on in Dagestan. Every day someone is killed, wounded, or attacked. Eventually, Russia may bid farewell to the Caucasus if no steps are taken to improve the situation.”
