TO CALL A POLITICIAN A SUCCESSOR IS EQUAL TO DESTROYING HIS FUTURE

Moskovsky Komsomolets, June 11, 1999, p.2

On June 10, Director of the Presidential Administration Voloshin made more sensational announcements. He reported that he considered Prime Minister Stepashin worthy of becoming the next president.

As Voloshin announced to information agencies, “I do not like the term ‘successor’. I am not going to use it, but in general he is, undoubtedly, a worthy man.” Thus Stepashin was acknowledged almost officially to be a successor. The fact that the destiny of such people is rather bleak as a rule is quite different matter. It has long been known that, to ruin the future of a politician one need only announce in public that he is a successor.

LEBED IN A DEAD END

Moskovsky Komsomolets, June 11, 1999, p.2

General and Governor Alexander Lebed was until recently considered one of the main possible successors of Yeltsin, but currently he is not remembered anymore, witnesses information collected during the course of a sociological poll conducted by the Public Opinion Fund. If in 1998 Lebed ranked second or third, currently he occupies only sixth place. Only 6% of Russians would vote for Lebed if ran for president (last year the figures were twice that). This year, 14% (against 20% in 1998) would not mind if Lebed were president. Generally, whatever one may say, the remoteness of a candidate from Moscow means a lot.

The question about the participation of Russian citizens residing in Chechnya in the Duma elections will be placed on the agenda of the upcoming meeting of Russian Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin with Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov, stated Director of the Central Electoral Committee Alexander Veshnyakov on June 10. Regarding where the elections would take place if the question is solved, Veshnyakov stated: “Of course all over Chechnya, if it is a federation subject.”
