SUMMARY:

USS Greenville collided with the Japanese trawler Ehime-Maru near the Hawaii. Ships of the US Coast Guard rescued 26 persons, but the remaining nine were never recovered. US Navy says that submarine was drilling an emergency surfacing when it hit the Japanese ship. USS Greenville herself sustained minor damage. Investigation is underway.

USS Greenville is known as a submarine for special assignments. It carries the DRSV. The Pentagon always emphasizes the rescue functions of the vessel but specialists say that it can carry diversants as easily. Well-informed sources say that the Americans used the DSRV to study the area where the Kursk had sunk.
