Russia keeps increasing its military activeness in the south and in the center of the country. Along with this, terrorists are the main opponent of our forces. Their look is not quite clear but large-scale actions of the troops in the struggle against them are impressive. Thus, about 500 servicemen, up to 50 various combat vehicles (mostly command staff vehicles, mobile communication and reconnaissance vehicles), a wing of Su-25 attack airplanes and a wing of Mi-24 strike helicopters from the collective rapid response forces in the Central Asian region participated in the command staff war game Border-2007 in Tajikistan. The plan of the exercise included the destruction of terrorists who invaded the territory of the CIS from Afghanistan by units of the collective rapid response forces from Russia, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

A similar plan is also planned for the participation of the Peace Mission-2007 to be held in summer at the Chebarkulsky training range of the Volga-Urals Military District. Units of the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will take part in this exercise. Reconnaissance is already complete and the scenario proposed by the Russian General Staff was checked. Representatives of the armed forces of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan plan four episodes of exercises at the Chebarkulsky training range aimed at training in joint operations against terrorists. The first episode trains in the skills of reconnaissance with use of aviation on terrain where bandit forces are concentrated. The second episode is reconnaissance, search, ambush, and examination of territories at borders and inside an area where an antiterrorist operation is conducted. The third episode is the taking of a village by terrorists, the release of hostages, and the seizing and liquidation of the bandit detachment. The fourth episode is the destruction of a large bandit detachment coming to rescue the detachment of terrorists blocked in a populated spot.

The troops are trained to destroy terrorists in all environments. The second stage of an antiterrorist exercise organized at Kapustin Yar and Ashuluk training ranges will be accomplished in the North Caucasian Military District tomorrow. Not only military command bodies, military units and formations of the North Caucasian Military District and formation of the Air Force and Air Defense Forces, but also units of the Interior Forces of the Interior Ministry intended for the prevention of terrorist threats in the southwest of Russia were attracted to the final command staff war game of aviation and air defense units with firing practice. About 8,000 servicemen participated in the exercise. The exercise is commanded by General of the Army Alexander Baranov, Commander of the North Caucasian Military District. Aviation units will have to be trained in stopping breaches of the airspace of the Russian Federation and breaching of the established flight regime, as well as providing assistance to aircraft hijacked by terrorists together with hostages. Pilots will fire at air targets imitating the aircraft used by terrorists and will drop bombs at conventional bases of militants. Units of the field air defense forces will fire at low-flying air targets performing a complicated maneuver in course and in altitude.

Troops of the special-purpose command commanded by Colonel general Yury Solovyev fulfilled similar tasks near Moscow.

Meanwhile, large antiterrorist naval exercises in the Black Sea began simultaneously with exercises in the North Caucasus. Among participants of Blackseafor exercises that will last until April 29, are Bulgarian corvette Bodry, Russian big landing ship Tsezar Kunikov, Romanian frigate Rear Admiral Statiu Sebastian, Turkish frigate Kemalreis and Ukrainian command ship Slavutich.

Besides fulfillment of antiterrorist exercises, the crews of ships of the international group will conduct joint exercises in tactical maneuvering, the fighting of surface ships, air defense and in various kinds of communication.

Thus, the beginning of spring in the Russian Armed Forces is traditionally marked with mass antiterrorist exercises. Unlike past years, now they are organized on a large scale, are conducted on earth, on sea and in air, as well as in all branches of the Russian army with the participation of international units and formations.
