AMAN TULEEV SPLITS FROM THE PEOPLE’S PATRIOTIC UNION

Despite the numerous announcements about the unity within the People’s Patriotic Union, the situation has proven to be different in reality. Kemerovo Governor Aman Tuleev has founded a new movement called Renaissance and Unity.
Aman Tuleev has announced that the People’s Patriotic Union did no good for the Russian people.
Only two representatives of the left opposition, Agrarian party leader Mikhail Lapshin and leader of the Spiritual Heritage movement Alexei Podberezkin attended the constitutive congress of Renaissance and Unity. Gennady Zyuganov ignored the event and did not even send a greeting.
According to Tuleev, the left will get not more that 20% of votes in the parliamentary election. The main trouble with them is that ideology overpowers common sense in their activities. This perspective may find a response in the People’s Patriotic Union.
STEPASHIN RELIES ON THE REGIONS

Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin: Relying on the regions is the main principle of the work of our government. I intend to stick to this principle. I am not afraid to say that I cooperate with President Yeltsin. Why should I contradict the Presidential Administration? However, I would like to stress that, according to the Constitution, the prime minister possesses great powers, and it is he who heads the executive branch of government.
